Dealing with overbearing parents as an adult

ggWe’ve all had those moments when our parents get just a little bit overpowering sometimes. Whether if it is going out with the wrong man or investing in a property, they will always want you to be doing something else, something different. For some of us, our parents have the tendency to be overbearing all the time, and it’s definitely not good. After a while they start to take over your life; your social life, your academic life and eventually your dreams. Yes, I do know this seems dramatic, but you would be surprised to find out that this actually happens in the real world.

Take a friend of mine, she’s probably one of the smartest people I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing. She’s not the kind of book smart that some people are, she is naturally gifted and can adapt to mostly every situation. A dream of hers was to once become an actress. I mean she has the personality for it and I’d thought she be a great candidate. Cue overbearing mother: she says that acting is not practical for the future and obviously tells her she cannot study it in college. From this she throws herself into her work just to please her mother, and her dream of acting is lost. It is boxed up, locked shut and pushed to the back of her mind. Now I’m not sure how she feels about giving her dream away, but the reality of the situation is that the only thing holding her back is her mum. It seems extremely harsh, but it’s the truth. Over time, she has developed a new dream, to study Chinese at one of the best Universities in the world, and to me that seems like a damn good dream. But would we ever know in the back of her mind, she’d be thinking about that box and its contents? Or the voice of her mother saying ‘no’.

It can be easy to take what your parents say to heart but as an adult you have to be responsible for your own life. Whether it be an apartment in the wrong state or a man who they don’t quite approve of (yet), it may not seem it now but you will start to resent them. Your dreams are your dreams for a reason and they can only be achieved with the right attitude so don’t let someone else’s fear get to you. Dream only work if you do after all. Even though it’s a tough situation, once you pull through the outcomes can be magnificent and endless.
