Breaking into any industry is a feat we have to be willing to handle. It’s not an easy task to tackle no matter the field. Do your research, gain experience and put yourself out there: these are the main pieces of advice we all receive when we’re starting out. Sometimes we need a little guidance. The fashion industry is one of the most competitive sought after career choices you can pursue. Whatever your path may be, in regards to your future in the industry, one of the most basic ways to learn is by putting your nose in a book of someone who was once starting out, just like you, or of a company’s rise to the top. With the help of Goodreads, this Huffington Post article, this article on the top 50 Fashion Books of All Time, and some book reviews I’ll be sharing a list I’ve compile on a few influential books for the fashionista!

If You Have to Cry, Go Outside: And Other Things Your Mother Never Told You by fashion publicist Kelly Cutrone, is a memoir that gives its readers an inside look on surviving the industry and a “sometimes brutal look,” according to the Post article, on how Cutrone made it to where she is.

The Fashion Intern written by Michele Granger, offers guidelines on finding and acquiring an internship in the industry as well as looking at it from a business perspective. Although more of a how to than an actual book, being that it’s a five star rated, we at Scriptoeris thought it would benefit our readers.

The Vogue Factor is the story of how Kirstie Clements went from a receptionist for Vogue Austrialia to the Editor-in-Chief. This book reveals the sometimes harsh truth about all the behind the scenes aspects of the industry.

In Fashion: From Runway to Retail, Everything You Need to Know to Break Into the Fashion Industry written by Annemarie Iverson, a former beauty and fashion news director of Harper’s Baazar and Editor-in-Chief of Seventeen, provides readers with advice on getting into the industry and finding the career path that’s right for you!

The Teen Vogue Handbook by Teen Vogue, is a compilation of interviews with high profile names in the industry. It gives readers the inside scoop on how success stories began.
